Risk of aspiration during feeding tube was reduced but not abolished percutaneous endoscopic hastrostomu (PEG). This open study was planned to assess cisapride may play a role in preventing aspiration in long-term enteral nutrition via PEG. A group of 29 patients can not swallow because of head and neck cancer (14 cases) or neurological disorders (15 cases) were included in the study, 7 neurological patients fed by nasogastric tube before placing the PEG, which suffered from aspiration pneumonia during probe meals . All patients received PEG, and 10 mg cisapride was regularly introduced by PEG before each administration of enteral nutrition and 6 hours after the start when feeding lasted for 12 hours or more. Only 1 minor complication observed during acute in-patient (intestinal obstruction, spontaneous decision after 36 hours). After being discharged from hospital, patients were observed throughout the 4935 days of feeding (from 47 508 days, average time per patient: 170 days) and estimated a week for the development of complications. No episode is likely / possible aspiration pneumonia observed during follow-up. Two neurological patients with involuntary movements was a gap feeding tubes, which was replaced without complications.
